2014-2015 Magnet Acceptance Letters Have Been Mailed

I have heard that 2014-2015 school year Magnet Acceptance letters have been sent out. You should be able to view your letter online at the eChoices web site.

If your child has been accepted, be sure to notify the school that you want the slot by the date indicated in the letter.

Good luck!

Space Available eChoices Applications now available

Parents can now apply for "space available seats" at select Magnet programs. Space Available seats will open after all of the students on the Waiting List have been offered placement at the selected school site. The application is available online here.

In order to see the list of Magnet programs that are part of the Space Available process, you will need to start an online application and enter the grade your child will be in next school year. Then scroll down to the "Program" section and click on the drop down menu for a list of participating schools that include your child's grade.

Note that priority points will not be considered with regard to Space Available applicants, and that priority points will be not accrued through the process. There does not appear to be a deadline for the Space Available application.

You can now complete the 2014-2015 Choices Applications

The eChoices web site is now live with clickable links, and everything you need to complete this year's application.

If you're ready to go, start here.

If you want a little more information before you start completing the application, start here.

The paper version of the Choices brochure can be viewed here, or obtained at your local LAUSD school, Educational Service Centers and PCSB Offices, and Los Angeles Public Libraries. The information listed for magnet schools includes the number of openings the school had last year, and how many applications it received.

There is a list of Magnet School Tours, but personally, I think your safest bet is to check the school's online calendar or to call their office. You can also check out magnet schools by attending the handful of scheduled Magnet Fairs.

Don't forget that the deadline to apply is November 15, 2013.
Good luck!

Norm Day 2013 is September 13

Friday, September 13, is "Norm Day" this year.

You can learn more about Norm Day here. But in a nutshell, it's extra important to have your child at school on Friday, because your school's funding for the year is determined in part by the number of students in attendance on Norm Day.

I believe Norm Day is also the last day that your Meal Benefits Application will be considered in determining whether your school qualifies for Title I funding, so you'll want to be sure to get your application in by that day. Learn more about the application and Title I funding here.

Finally, many schools have to make adjustments to classrooms due to the number of enrolled students on Norm Day. Therefore, if you are unhappy with your child's teacher, this is the best time to request a new placement for your child.
