Each magnet school focuses one of the following themes:
Alternative Schools - Focus on cultural and ethnic diversity, independent thinking, and active parent participation, to help students grow in self-esteem and academic skills through cooperative learning, independent projects, critical thinking activities, and volunteer projects
Centers for Enriched Studies (only two in the district) - Emphasize creative/critical thinking in all disciplines. Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) has grades 6-12. Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (SOCES) has grades 4-12.
Communication Arts (journalism, radio-television broadcasting, theatre, video/film production, computers, digital arts, advertising) - Curriculum integrated with technology to create exciting and rigorous programs. Most facilities have state-of-the-art classrooms/studios.
Fine, Performing and Visual Arts - Specialized curriculum/intensive training in a particular art where student shows signs of artistic ability or the potential for growth.
Foreign Language - Explore the world of language, international studies, economics, and business, and learn to appreciate/understand ethnic and cultural similarities/differences.
Gifted & High Ability - For students who demonstrate ability to work two years above grade level in academic subjects.
Global Awareness - Students study world issues from an environmental perspective, reflecting on cultural diversity, global economics, politics, and real life issues.
Highly Gifted - Groups students to allow for a demanding broad-based academic program, with emphasis on problem solving and the development of higher level thinking skills as well as positive social emotional growth. Students scoring at 99.5%+ on an LAUSD intellectual assessment are eligible; priority is given to students with scores of 99.9%.
Humanities - Interdisciplinary approach to increase student awareness of and appreciation for the world.
Law/Government/Police Academies - Designed to prepare young people who wish to pursue careers in law, police science, criminology, forensics and related fields. Most schools feature state-of-the-art courtrooms, law libraries, and access to the latest technology.
Math/Science/Technology - Programs are geared to the student interest in mathematics, science, and computer technology.
Medical and Health Careers - Programs emphasize activity-based instruction and learning experiences at major hospitals, health care facilities, universities, and science research laboratories, to prepare future doctors, scientists and allied health professionals.
