Effective July 1, 2011, LAUSD students in grades 7 through 12 must present proof of a pertussis or whooping cough (Tdap) booster shot. If proof is not presented, students will not be permitted to attend school - there is no grace period. Students who do not have proof will either be sent home and may not return until they get the shot, or assigned to remain in the auditorium or a non-instructional area until they meet the new requirement.
The whooping cough booster requirement is a state mandate resulting from the current epidemic of whooping cough, and specifically an increase in the number of cases among teenagers.
Visit the LA County Public Health Department web site or call the LA County Information Line at 211 to find public health clinics where the shot may be available. You can also find more information on getting free or low-cost shots here.
